A Chopper in Katra, J&K has crashed carrying group of passengers. The Chopper has crashed on the way to Vaishno Devi Shrine, one of the most popular pilgrimages in India. The initial report has suggested that at least 7 people have been killed in the tragic incident including the woman pilot.
Aircraft service is available from Katra to Sanjichat in Vaishno Devi Yatra. The eyewitnesses explained that the Chopper lost control as soon as it took off from the Sanjichat and caught fire. The pilot tried to avoid the clash with the built up area nearby and tried to land in an open space. However, the fire was too much and it ultimately crashed killing 7 passengers on the chopper.
The foggy weather has been blamed for the crash in the initial investigation; however an official report is yet to come. The authorities have not ruled out any possibility of mechanical failure however. The Chopper belongs to the Himalayan Heli Services. This privately owned company also offers Choppers for famous Char Dham Yatra as well.
The identification of the passengers has been done but the name has not been released. It is informed that Pilot Sumita Vijayan was at the helm when the Chopper crashed and she has lost her life.
Thousands of visitors go to the famous Vaishno Devi Shrine to pay visit to Goddess. The 10 KM long trekking is however tough for many and they choose to be airlifted. The tragic incident has created mourning among the visitors as the situation remains tensed.
