Suresh Kalmadi has been appointed as the Life President of Indian Olympic Association along with Abhay Singh Chautala. Interestingly, both have strong administration experience and the earlier also has tainted image in Sports Administration especially in India. However, the IOA clarified that the choices were made unanimously in the Annual General Meeting.
Mr. Kalmadi has served as IOA President for 15 long years since 1996 to 2011. He was also the President of the Asian Athletes Association for 13 years from 2000 to 2013. The Former Congress MP was even member of council of International Athletics Federation from 2001 to 2013. He was arrested for his alleged role in 2010 CWG Scam. The multi billion Commonwealth Games Scandal put him behind the bars for 10 months before he was released in bail.
Abhay Singh Chautala
He was annulled by the International Olympic committee to be the President of IOA from December 2012 to 2014 when IOA was suspended. However, like most of the other Sports Administrators in India, he also has some rough history. He was the President of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation or IABF which was later terminated by the AIBA for manipulation in elections. He was recently elected as the President of an Olympic Association in Haryana. The association is the rival of the Haryana Olympic Association and if the reports are to be believed from The Financial Times, then IOA has reportedly recognized it.
The Asian Herald View
Once the Olympic is over, the entire India join the chorus of less medals and lack of infrastructure in India. However, the tainted administrators come back to power and conflict of interests also come across. People however remain silent and wait for the next Olympic debacle to raise their concerns. Indian sports administration needs massive revamp and may be it is the time when another kind of Lodha Committee is set up to look after the issues .
It is now or never.
