The case shocked South Africa when Anisha and Joey Van Niekerk were brutalized. They were raped in front of each other and hung on the ceiling of shipping containers with meathooks.

The killers ensured that the couple dies a slow and painful death. Joey was killed in front of Anisha, revealed the court document. The sick gang then burnt their bodies.

But what was the motive of the crime? A piece of land was behind the heinous crime.

The mastermind of the crime Koos Strydom wanted the plot where the victim lived. The couple put the land up for sale, but the Strydom did not have money to buy it. So, he hatched a plan.

With the help of his wife, he kidnapped the couple and forced them to sign a fake purchase agreement. A witness said that the women were naked and they begged for their lives, but it was not heard and the sexual violence started.

Strydom committed suicide in jail while waiting for his trial.

The judge said that “You are a gang of evil-minded criminals,” to other members of the criminal. Judge Bert Bam called the crime as inhumane, cruel, evil, and despicable.

The wife of the mastermind, Mercia Strydom pleaded for mercy and said she was only 21 years old then. She insisted that she was not at the crime scene, however, the witnesses dismissed the claim.

The judge sentenced her to two life sentences and additional 69 years in prison. Another member of the gang, Alex Modau, was sentenced to two life sentences along with 54 years of additional prison.

James and Jack Sithole, two brothers were also sent to a life sentence with additional 54 years in prison.

The relatives of the couple shared relief after they were ensured that the killers would never be able to get out of the prison.

Rina Payne, sister of Joey said,

“It was unbearable to listen through what my sister and Anisha had to go through before and after their deaths. I am just happy that the killers will have to pay for what they have done,” reported by the Sun.
