Same Sex Marriage is a thing now in Switzerland provided the Swiss vote for it. The Swiss Parliament finally approved the bill and paved the way for legalizing marriage for gay couples. In huge news for LGBT rights, same sex marriage is now a matter in the hands of the people.
The ultra-orthodox Christian population of Switzerland would now choose it through a referendum. Switzerland is one of the very few countries in Europe where same sex marriage is not legal.
The country allows the couple to be registered partners. However, that is not the same as the married couple. They don’t have the right of obtaining citizenship and cannot jointly adopt children as well.
The bill is now approved in both the chambers of the parliament after many rounds of debate since 2013. This allows gay and lesbian couples to marry. This bill also approves the lesbian couple to have sperm donation.
The activists have termed it as a big win for the LGBT Communities. The Rainbow Families Association stood up for the rights said that they are very much ready for the referendum if it happens.
Matthias Erhardt, Deputy President of National Committee of Rainbow said,
‘We have 82 percent of the population behind us and, thanks to the mobilization of the LBGT community, our partner organizations, and the political parties who support us, we will be able to further increase acceptance of LGBT people in society.”
