Prime Minister Narendra Modi refuses honorary doctorate degree from BHU. BHU said that they sought permission from Prime Minister as they wanted to confer the degree. However, PM Modi has refused to accept that due to his personal policy. PM Modi does not accept the honorary degrees and this time he did not change the policy as well.

Narendra Modi is visiting BHU today and the university authorities in Varanasi thought of conferring him with the degree. However, it did not go well as he readily refused the Doctorate of Law. The Universities have been informed about the decision. The authorities informed that the degree was to be conferred for his role as an Innovator, reformer and outstanding leader in Public Service. As PM Modi is not interested, the authorities dropped the plan from today’s curriculum. However, Mr. Modi will address the students of BHU. He is also visiting the Sant Ravidas Temple in Varanasi on his second of visit to Varanasi. However, the fear of protests in BHU is a grave concern as they have already raised their voice on similar tone with JNU and came with #StandwithJNU campaign.

However, this is not the first time that Narendra Modi has refused such honorary degrees. He has been doing it since long time even when he was a Chief Minister of Gujarat. Several universities in Gujarat wanted to confer him the degree but he never accepted any of them. In 2004, during his visit to the US, Narendra Modi refuses honorary doctorate degree from a university in Louisiana. It was said that the university wanted to confer Mr. Modi for his role on social transformation especially women empowerment.
