Mass extinction, climate disruption, pandemics, and declining health are a few of the horror stories waiting for us in the future, warned a group of International scientists. Lead by Professor Paul Ehrlich, author of The Population Bomb, 17 experts said that people do not really understand the urgency and gravity of the situation.
The scientists warned that human existence could be in trouble due to inaction. The scientists wrote in the Frontier in Conservation Science and explained that the magnitude of loss and the vastness of the problem is yet to be understood by the mainstream despite the fabric of human civilization is eroding.
They wrote in a report that,
“The scale of the threats to the biosphere and all its lifeforms – including humanity – is in fact so great that it is difficult to grasp for even well-informed experts.”
Talking about dealing with the challenges, the experts spoke about big changes. The changes required in global capitalism, education, and equality said the experts. The researchers argued that changes are required in perpetual economic growth, properly pricing environmental externalities, stopping the use of fossil fuels, reining in corporate lobbying, and empowering women.
This comes after the governments throughout the world miserably failed to meet the UN Aichi Biodiversity target. This is the second consecutive time the governments failed to achieve their 10 years target. Recently, 50 countries pledged together to save one-third of the world by 2030.
