Katie also sent him her obscene photos and videos over Snapchat. The student did the same. However, the photos were soon leaked and they stopped exchanges thereafter.

While speaking on the case, Katie told the court that she was only seeking validation amid problems in her marriage and feelings of insecurity. She told the court that she just wanted someone to tell her that she is pretty. However, her arguments did not make any impact on the case. After hearing the court decided to send her to prison for 3 years 10 months. She can only be released from prison once she has completed at least 2 years 3 months in prison. Katie broke into tears when the judgment was announced at Newcastle District Court.

Married Teacher Jailed

Katie Smith belongs to the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. She befriended the boy in the final term of 2018. They kissed and groped each other in school and even in car parks, the court heard.

The case came to the light when the student told her mother about the encounters. The mother contacted the police and the investigation started. Shortly, Katie was arrested.

Smith admitted the charges of grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity, indecent assault of a person under 16, and intentionally sexually touching a child between 10 and 16. Katie told the court that she did not want to have sexual relations but wanted validation.

The teacher admitted that her appearance and eating disorder made her feel vulnerable. Katie told the court that she would cry in front of the mirror and seek validation. She was even pursuing therapy for personality disorder.

However, Judge Kara Shead said that the actions were unacceptable and a breach of trust. She said that a stern message should be given for sex crimes against minors especially when a teacher abusing a student.
