Los Angeles Lakers won their 17th National Basketball Association Championship on Monday and fans went crazy. Well, the craziness was beyond words in the downtown.
More than 30 buildings and businesses were damaged by the fans during the celebration, Detroit News reported.
Police have arrested at least 76 people for the charges of failing to disperse, vandalism, and assault on police officers.
Eight officers and two fans were injured and were taken to hospital during the chaotic celebrations.
The celebration started as a peaceful joyous event but reportedly some unruly individuals were mixed into it. The crowd soon started throwing bottles, rocks, and other projectiles towards the police.
The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Miami Heat by 106-93 on Sunday night.
Los Angeles was celebrating the win with firecrackers everywhere. However, the turn of events forced the police to take action. Some policemen on horseback tried to push the crowd away, however, the violence did not stop.
Previously, Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti appealed to people not to celebrate the win and avoid public gathering. He urged them to cheer from home.
“As we cheer our @Lakers’ 17th championship, please remember it’s still not safe to gather in groups.”
