IND v WI T20 – What’s wrong with Indian team selection

IND v WI T20 at Sabina Park Jamaica is merely a formality for the in the Indian team. India went to play West Indies four five ODIs and one-off T20 match. The major attraction of the T20 match is probably the comeback of Chris Gayle into the Caribbean team. India has already registered the one-day series. However, Captain Virat Kohli has not been impressed with team selection. This was an opportunity to try and test the bench strength of Indian Cricket.

India faced a huge setback add to Champions Trophy against Pakistan in the final Indian team was reduced to an ordinary batting unit under the depressing situation. The West Indies series would have been the ideal time for the team management to try players like Rishabh Pant. Pant has impressed the selection committee during the IPL. But Captain Kohli felt the other way. He kept on trying Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni. Today at the T20 match Kohli went for three Wicket Keeper batsmen, Dhoni, Karthik, and Pant. A very obvious question comes here that has India last all the bench strength? Kohli insisted on Kuldeep Yadav and he did well. However, it was a different approach for Rishabh Pant. Probably Kohli doesn’t want to take a chance that can leave MS Dhoni out of the squad.

But Indian team needs to think ahead at least for the World Cup 2019 in England. MS Dhoni is slowly losing reflexes and Yuvraj Singh is no longer the same player he used to be. Rahul Dravid suggested that the future of Dhoni and Yuvraj must be decided well before the world cup. However, the selection team, BCCI, and Virat Kohli are least bothered. There has been an absolute calmness in the camp. Nobody bothers to answer, no one is proactive and neither anyone looks determined. After the entire episode of Anil Kumble, it looks even more visible now. But is this the way forward for the Indian team? Will there be more talents in the team? Should there be a tough call on the team selection? Well, this seems to be very poor suggestions now. BCCI looks very busy to frame something to cement the place of Ravi Shastri as the Head Coach of India as suggested by the Captain. Ind v WI series is proving out to be a big disappointment for the team.

Even though India has won few matches and is currently No 1 Test Team in the world, it feels this is one of the worst times, Indian cricket has been through.
