China blocks the WHO team from carrying out the coronavirus origin investigation. The WHO has confirmed that the team has been blocked.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a rare rebuke said he is disappointed. He informed that two scientists who left their home countries for Wuhan to investigate the COVID19 origin were blocked. They were told that the Chinese officials have not approved the necessary permissions.
Interestingly, the agreement was previously agreed by China and WHO after months of negotiation.
China blocks the WHO Team
Tedros told in a news conference,
“I am very disappointed with this news. I have been in contact with senior Chinese officials and I have once again made clear that the mission is a priority for WHO and the international team.”
He confirmed that he is eager to start the mission as soon as possible.
One scientist has already left and another is waiting in a third country as transit.
WHO is negotiating with China to allow a team of global scientists to access the key sites to investigate the origin of the corona virus. In May, WHO agreed to investigate after more than 100 countries signed a resolution for an independent probe that irked China.
WHO still hopes that it is a logistical issue and they will be able to investigate freely and transparently after a year of the outbreak.
a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hua Chunying said,
“In order to ensure that the international expert group that comes to China can work smoothly, it is needed to fulfill the necessary procedures and make relevant specific arrangements. The two sides are still negotiating about this,” reported CNN.
The investigation is a time taking the effort and it has hit yet another road block.
