Upul Tharanga suspended for two of the upcoming Champions Trophy match. Yes, the Sri Lankan skipper has been suspended by the ICC Match Referee David Boon for serious over-rate violation. Sri Lanka fell short by 4 overs today at The Oval against South Africa. He pleaded guilty and has been suspended for the next two matches. The other members of the team were fined 60% of their match fee.

Sri Lanka lost the match against South Africa in the Group B. However, this would be a major jolt to the team ahead of the two crucial fixture. Sri Lanka would play India and Pakistan on June 8 and June 12 respectively and he would not be available for the team. For the first two overs, the players are fined for 10% of the match fee and then 20% for each over for the successive overs. The Captain accumulates 2 Suspension points and that is equivalent to One Test Match, 2 ODIs or 2 T20s whichever comes first.

However, it is understood that Angelo Mathews, the regular Sri Lanka Captain may play the next match and captain his side against India and Pakistan. However, if does not get match fit, then Dinesh Chandimal may take up the responsibility of captaining the side. Upul Tharanga has recently come back to the side and has been preferred over Dinesh Chandimal as the stand-in captain for Sri Lanka. He has done brilliantly so far and was also the first choice in Champions Trophy against South Africa. However, he could not take his team home and lost the match by a large margin of 91 runs against the ABD’s Men in the SLvSA match.
