BJP in West Bengal was a distant dream or may be a day dream a decade back. The party had no organizational hold and neither there was any interest to get Bengal from the regional parties. The Bengal was the stronghold of the Lefts and Mamata Banerjee used to fight the Government to remain in relevance. The Congress did make some progress lately, thanks to Adhir Ranjan Chaudhury, a heavyweight leader from Murshidabad District of West Bengal. However, things have changed in last 10 years and it has changed so much that BJP in West Bengal is well within reach now.
Contai (South) bypoll election of West Bengal shows that BJP has made huge progress in West Bengal. The saffron brigade and the saffron politics is working in Bengal, which nobody thought would ever work. As per the latest bypoll election, TMC won by the majority with 55% vote share. But BJP is the main opposition this time with 30% vote share. CPIM and Congress lost their deposits. Congress secured only 2270 votes in the election. CPIM managed to get 17243 votes. The BJP, however, got 52843 votes as compared to 95369 votes of TMC candidate.
BJP in Bengal is trying everything to get into relevance and it was clear indication that the saffron party is seriously eyeing the Bengal after stumping Uttar Pradesh. The 2019 election of Loksabha or the Parliamentary election would be key for the party before going to 2021 Assembly elections in Bengal.
